In October, the U.S. intelligence community – including 17 military and civilian agencies – concluded that Russia conducted a campaign of cyber attacks designed to interfere with U.S. elections. Now, there are reports out of the CIA that not only did Russia intervene to help Donald Trump win the presidency, but that Vladimir Putin was personally involved. Today, U.S. officials reported that the FBI backs this conclusion.
The electors deserve to know the extent to which Russian hackers acted to sway the election, and if the Trump campaign had any knowledge of this activity.
These allegations have major implications for the strength of our democracy, and we’re still learning the severity of the Russian cyberattacks. Just this morning, CNN reported that Russian hacking has continued targeting U.S. political organizations since the November election. This news comes as the Election Assistance Commission – an independent federal agency that assists states with elections – also reported that it may have been hacked.
Already, more than 50 electors have formally requested an intelligence briefing on foreign intervention in our election. In their letter to Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, these electors quote Alexander Hamilton in the Federalist Papers, stating that a key purpose of the Electoral College is to prevent a “desire in foreign powers to gain an improper ascendant in our councils.”
The integrity of our election system depends on the electors casting their ballots with full knowledge of foreign intervention in our election.
Urge President Obama to do everything he can in the final days before the Electoral College votes to inform the electors about foreign interference with our election.
Thanks for standing up for our democracy.
