Rex Tillerson’s track record of putting corporate interests ahead of American interests is unacceptable.
The American people cannot count on Tillerson to represent our country in critical international forums such as climate negotiations. Here’s why:
Climate deception – big time
Exxon Mobil knew about the dangers of climate change for decades, but waged an aggressive campaign claiming the science was uncertain. This deception continued in the 2000s under Tillerson’s leadership. Just last week, Exxon gave Tillerson a $180 million retirement package. If our leaders confirm Tillerson as Secretary of State, they would send a message to the world that our nation prioritizes corporate profits over our air, water, and climate.
Corporate interests ahead of American interests
Tillerson has a close relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who awarded Tillerson the Order of Friendship, a top honor Russia gives to foreigners. U.S. intelligence agencies have concluded that Russia interfered with the 2016 presidential campaign in order to help Trump. Now Trump has chosen Putin’s pal Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State. Exxon and Russia stand to make billions if Tillerson and Trump succeed in lifting U.S. sanctions on Russia.
With our global community moving rapidly toward a clean energy economy, Trump nominee Rex Tillerson would be a step backward and would put America’s global climate leadership at risk. That’s why it’s more important than ever to urge the Senate to reject nominees who put corporate profits before people.
The Senate is responsible for considering and voting on Donald Trump’s nominations. Take action now by asking your Senators to defeat Tillerson's nomination.
