A MAJORITY OF CONGRESSIONAL DEMOCRATS INTRODUCE BICAMERAL RESOLUTIONS SUPPORTING A CLEAN ENERGY ECONOMY

133 Members of Congress support powering our country with more than 50 percent clean energy by 2030

Today, Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) and Congressman John Delaney (D-MD) announced the introduction of companion Congressional resolutions, calling for a national goal to power our country with more than 50 percent clean and carbon free electricity by 2030. Senator Cardin and Congressman Delaney were joined by 131 Members of Congress in supporting the #50by30 goal. Members of the Congressional Black Caucus, Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, Congressional Progressive Caucus, New Democrats Coalition, Safe Climate Caucus, and the Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition joined in cosponsoring the resolution.

“Achieving more than 50 percent clean energy by 2030 is a bold, achievable goal that will help tackle the climate crisis and jump-start our country’s clean energy economy,” said NextGen Climate president Tom Steyer. “There is broad grassroots support for the #50by30 goal, and I commend these Members of Congress for listening to their constituents and showing leadership on this issue.”

The companion Congressional resolutions express the sense of the House and Senate that the United States should set a goal to power our country with more than 50 percent clean and carbon free electricity by 2030. Achieving this goal will help our country avoid the worst impacts of climate change while growing our economy, improving public health and protecting our national security.

According to a recent ICF International report, transitioning to a more than 50 percent clean energy economy by 2030 with existing technology will create more than 1 million additional jobs, increase U.S. GDP by $145 billion, and save American families $400 per year on their energy bills.
